Interior. Exotica. Night. is a collaborative video by Julia Hendrickson and Kate Whiteway in which a performer and crew attempt to recreate a striptease scene from the 1994 f ilm Exotica, directed by Atom Egoyan. In the original film, a father whose daughter has died watches a dancer perform the same routine, nightly. As we watch the dance repeat, we witness a bond forming between father and dancer, each laundering their wounds through the erotic performance. 

In our work, we have stripped away the rest of the film and isolated the few shots of the dancer’s routine. The gratification of the striptease never smooths out and the project of striving towards complete replication continues, flawed and relentless. Rehearsed through repetitive actions and idiosyncratic routines, here, grief and desire inform each other, masking themselves in each other’s shape. Our work looks for the ineffable, indirect impact of loss, which couched in routine, wants to be rehearsed, until the vagueness recedes and something more clear emerges.
